France moves to regulate environmental display

January 2011 is right around the corner. This will mark a great step in the French ecological revolution, when consumer goods will begin bearing ecolabels.

The French Environmental Round Table, le Grenelle de l’Environnement, is currently discussing standards and methodologies for the upcoming ecolabels.

Moving towards the display of the environmental impact of products.

Displaying the environmental impact of consumer goods is no longer just an objective, it will soon become a reality.  And Carbonostics is on the forefront of ecolabeling in Europe.

France moves to regulate environmental display

January 2011 is right around the corner.  This will mark a great step in the French ecological revolution - when consumer goods will start bearing ecolabels.

The French Environmental Round Table, le Grenelle de l'Environnement, is currently discussing standards and methodologies for the upcoming regulation.

The European Commission is exploring new standards and methodologies, some of which include enhancements to its existing ecolabeling scheme.  In a related development, France is developing tools for regulatory carbon and environmental labeling of consumer goods, to start in 2011.  Labeling is expected to be mandatory for 11 product categories - such as hygiene and beauty products, clothing, and banking and insurance services, to name a few.  The carbon footprint will be displayed on all these products, as well as other main environmental indicators such as water use or biodiversity, depending on the product category.

The Blue Horse Associates team is participating actively in the discussions around the framing of this legislation to ensure that Carbonostics (cost+carbon+nutrition) is compliant with these standards and measures.

Measuring and Reporting Carbon

Various forms of energy measurement and greenhouse gas reporting are being debated around the world, and you need to be ready to respond.  Whether it’s for the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), mandatory ecolabeling, or Wal-Mart’s Sustainability Index, you need to know how to measure your environmental impact.

Carbonostics is the ideal tool for product-level measurement and reporting.

Carbonostics can give you clarity on where your environmental impacts are for your top selling products.  However, for the supply chain, individual facilities, or process-level measurement, you will need a different approach.

Carbonostics is proud to partner with Crystal Globe, developed by WEIR-tscs, to measure environmental impact throughout the supply chain.  Data gathered and calculated within Crystal Globe meets the requirements of the CDP, GRI, and Wal-Mart's Sustainability Index and fits neatly back into Carbonostics when you are ready to tackle product-level measurement in more detail.

Contact Chris Stanley with your questions about Crystal Globe, or click here to start a Carbonostics product-level analysis.
